The thing that makes the biggest impression
when people visit your home is your front door. It’s
kind of like the shoes you wear when going for a job interview:
if they’re clean and shiny it’s a positive reflection
on you. The same thing goes for your front door: if it’s
tired and drab and in need of a fresh coat of paint it sets
a negative tone for the rest of your home – particularly
if you’re trying to sell it!
Your front door should have a personality all its own. You
could choose a colour that complements the colour of the bricks
on the outside of your home, or be daring and paint a dramatic
black or a rich cognac. Historical colours are very rich and
give an ambiance of sophistication.
Take a good look at the hardware on the door - if it’s
looking tired think about a faux finish! A black base dry
brushed with a silver paint gives the illusion of brushed
nickel. The same black base dry brushed with copper and a
little light green makes a gorgeous verdigris finish. And
don’t forget your mailbox! It can be painted to complement
the hardware as can outdoor light fixtures that need a fresh
new look.
Now that your home’s entrance looks grand and welcoming,
think garden urns for each side of the door: that’s
our next Get Painting project so don’t miss next month’s
edition!
