Take a Shine to Metallic Paints!

“Feature walls” are back in style and what better to make a room glow than a shimmering metallic wall!

When painting a wall with metallic paint it’s always best to choose a primer tinted with a colour close to the shade of the metallic paint you’ll be using. If you’ve chosen metallic gold, use a yellow tinted primer close in colour to the metallic gold. If using metallic silver, prime with a light grey and for metallic copper, prime with a terra cotta. Use two good coats of primer to eliminate the existing wall colour - the tinted primer will give you better coverage when applying the metallic finish over top.

If metallics sound a little adventurous, remember that you want to use them in feature areas, not all over the room. And if you tire of it, don’t worry – it’s only paint!

  • Make Your Furniture Look Like Exotic Leather! Instant Architecture! Sanding 101

Instant Architecture!

Add architectural interest to your home with Architectural or Finishing Moulding. Applying moulding is a great Do-it-yourself project that can create the illusion of height or depth, give definition to plain spaces and make inexpensive furniture look like unique collectors’ pieces!

Add interest to a hallway by applying mouldings in the shape of rectangular panels along the walls. Finish a kitchen or dining room with a chair rail moulding placed halfway up the wall. Or, why not surround your dining room chandelier with a beautiful circular ceiling panel that looks like plaster? You’ll be surprised at the endless options available.

Architectural Moulding used on walls, ceilings and around doors are particularly impressive. Finishing Moulding can be used to embellish furniture, camouflage joints and highlight display areas or decorative elements.

Moulding offers a variety of painting and staining choices. If you prefer a natural wood look, choose wood moulding. You’ll need to prepare it properly after installing by filling nail holes with Dyna Patch and sanding with 220 grit Dynamic Sandpaper. Remove sanding residue with a Dynamic tack cloth and apply stain with a good quality Dynamic natural bristle brush.

If you prefer the look of painted moulding, choose MDF, a wood fibre product that is pre-prepped and ready for paint. You can paint moulding to match the trim throughout your home, or choose a contrasting colour to the walls of the room. Ensure that the colour is complementary to ensure the contrast is not too stark. For example, a soft tan room would look wonderful with trim painted in a deeper shade of the same tan.

After installing the moulding, fill nail holes with Dynamic’s Dynapatch compound and sand smooth with 220 grit paper. Wipe with a tack cloth and you’re ready to get painting!
