Try a creative project the whole family can do together—change standard terra cotta flowerpots into home decorating pieces!
Give plain, flowerpots some pizzazz by adding decorative paint.
To achieve an eye-catching, faux tortoise-shell look, first apply a coat of DecoArt Patio Paint in Woodland Brown over both the outside, and inside, of the flowerpot. After this has dried, apply a second coat. Next, mix two parts DecoArt Patio Paint Daisy Cream and one part DecoArt Patio Paint in Sunflower Yellow. Using the Poly-Brush, paint this mixture on the outside of the pot, and leave to dry.
Dilute DecoArt Americana Paint in Raw Sienna with an equal amount of water. Take a Dynamic Craft Brush, and with this mixture, paint a small section of the pot—take care that the paint does not run on the sides of the pot. As the paint begins to dry, dip an old toothbrush in rubbing alcohol and flick it over the drying paint. This will cause the paint to instantly pull away from the pot, revealing the colour beneath.
Use a hair dryer to quicken the drying process, so that you can continue onto another small section. When all of the sides are painted, repeat the process on the rim and bottom of the pot and leave to dry. Do the process again, but use DecoArt Americana Paint in Burnt Sienna and then Burnt Umber. Let dry. Touch up the paint inside the pot, if needed. Finish by applying two or more coats of varnish to the outside of the pot, using your Poly-Brush.
You can get your kids' help with this project. You can also get creative and make the pots match your interior design scheme. But why stop there? If you're making a gift, personalize it—add the year, write a message, or even adopt a theme for everyone in your family. The designs, and the fun times you'll have, are endless!
