Serving Up Style!

Dynamic Designers Jim Connelly and Peter De Sousa (seen on Debbie Travis' Facelift and the Designer Guys) have developed a beautiful and functional project for this issue of Get Painting using a traditional print and a simple glass plate – you won’t believe the results!

(Before you begin, please note: A traditional print was used for this project but you could personalize your project with a special family picture, a photocopy of a favorite print, napkin or greeting card. This project is worked on the reverse side of the glass plate (back side facing up) – be sure to let each process dry before moving on to the next step. )

Step 1
1. Brush amber shellac on both sides of your photocopy. The shellac will seal and protect the image and also give an aged appearance to the print.
Tip: always use a photocopy (colour or black and white and reserve your original).
Step 2
Using the bristles of your brush, pat amber shellac on your plate.
Step 3
Cut out the image of your print and glue to your plate using regular white glue. For added detail outline your image with an 18kt Gold Leaf pen.
Visual of front side of plate.
Step 4
Using a very dry paint brush, stipple paint through the stencil. This step adds dimension to your plate. We used a Dynamic stencil – Victoriana DK100030 and a burnt orange paint colour.
Step 5
Using a very dry paint brush, stipple the entire plate with gold glaze. Use this very sparingly; you are trying to create a bit of a sparkle contrast before going on to the next step.
Step 6
Apply three thin coats of black paint.
Step 7
Seal with an oil based varnish
Because the top side of these plates have not been touched you can use them for serving. We do not recommend immersing these plates in water, it is best to just wipe clean with a damp cloth.
