Preparing to Paint

A smooth, professional looking paint finish depends as much on how well you prepare the surface as it does on how you apply the paint and the tools you use for the job. Don't skimp on prep time - invest in some up front preparation and the pay-off will be a beautiful, professional looking, lasting paint finish!

Scraping and Patching
Start by loosening cracking or peeling paint on surfaces such as concrete using a wire brush. On wooden surfaces or drywall, use a bent scraper to quickly loosen cracking or peeling paint, or a flexible metal scraper to chip away loose paint, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

Use a flexible putty knife to apply Dyna Patch premixed patching compound to repair cracks, holes and any other damage. You’ll make fast work of plaster and drywall repairs and can even patch metal doors with Dyna Patch – it’s ready-to-use, dries quickly – it’s paintable in 30 minutes! – and won’t shrink, sag or crack if applied correctly. Clean-up is easy, too – just use soap and water.

Caulk all gaps and seams in the surface with the appropriate Dynamic caulking product and a caulking gun and allow to thoroughly dry. Be especially careful to check around window and door frames for areas where caulking may need to be replaced.

Sanding
Once all patching compound and caulking has dried completely you're ready to prepare the surface for paint. Use Dynamic's sandpaper and sanding sponges, which come in a variety of grades or grits (which describes how coarse or fine the sanding surface is). Use 120 -180 grit for initial sanding, followed by a 220+ grit (which is very fine) to produce a smooth surface ready for paint. Sand patches so that they will not be noticeable and lightly sand glossy finishes so that new paint can adhere.

After sanding and before painting, wipe all surfaces with an anti-static tack cloth to remove all dust and particles and ensure a smooth finish.

Taping
Use Dynamic EdgeWise painter's tape to effectively mask off areas where you do not want to apply paint. It prevents seepage and paint bleed-through when pressed firmly in place and, unlike masking tape, will not damage painted surfaces or leave a residue, even after 10 days in direct sunlight. The crape paper construction allows application in hard to ready areas such as corners, curves and irregular shapes.
